ROAD TRIP | CHASING SOUTH SWELLS
Starring Sheldon Simkus, Mitch Parkinson and Reef Doig.
Photography Andy Morris.
The run of east swell has been exceptional on the Gold Coast. But with the east window shutting down for a few days and the masses fighting off the wall at D’bah, the sniff of a solid south swell hitting below the QLD/NSW border was luring for the guys. So yesterday, with the cars filled, the promise of fun, sand-bottom wedges, we drove until we scored!
We generally avoid telling people were we find fun waves (in respect for locals so our cars aren’t waxed), but if you’ve been here, one glimpse at this shot and you’ll know where it is.Mitch Parko adjusts for the looming section while Sheldon looks on.Mitch a couple of seconds after the above shot.Reef arcs.Looking north at the empty lefts.Sheldon laying it down for Reef paddling back out.Reef Doig hunting the toobe.Mitch has just exited the backdoor section of the wedge and here, sets up the second section. Two barrels, one wave. Life’s good.Sheldon putting too much strain on our sensor size.Anonymous local happy with a couple of cameras (and Gold Coast blow-ins).Sheldon in the afternoon golden hour.Mitch banging the top off his last wave.Reef skipped school for the opportunity to surf a new wave. Wise choice (especially when one of your subjects at school is surfing).Mitch happy he left the Gold Coast for the day.
